Growing up her mom wasn’t around much, so she and dad went hunting, fixed cars and made memories. Later in life dad remarried a woman with her own children. Still, so far so good. Dad felt like everyone got along. He told his daughter that “someday” the muscle car and some of the special hunting rifles were going to be hers. Can you see how this ends? Dad dies and step-mom gives daughter nothing. When you have children from a previous relationship–protect them! A prenuptial agreement or a great estate plan or both. It is not a slam against your current or new relationship, it is smart parenting. It is preventing problems. It is eliminating the hurt I see and hear when I meet with these people. They aren’t greedy, but often the symbols of a parent’s love are taken away; it’s sad.
