Hail, Hail, The Gang’s All Here

Holiday Reconnecting

In the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s there was a group of seven or so families connected in various ways, kids together at dance classes, long-time friends, new friends from bridge, neighbors old and new. They were called “The Gang”. The kids of various ages totaled somewhere around 25. We spent Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day at one of the homes on a lake. We spent winter holiday going as a group to Lutsen generally. All of it was magical, adults doing their thing and kids swimming, playing, skiing, all reconnecting at dinner for sure. There were parties when the Gang got together throughout the year too. As the older group of kids reached their teens, the adults became “The Moldy Oldies” (I think they were maybe in their mid-forties then).

Yesterday many of us reconnected for a Christmas gathering at the senior complex where two of the Gang reside. There are five parents left, one married couple and the rest surviving souses. They range in age from 88-91.They have living arrangements as various as their individual needs. From living in their own house and still driving to extensive care. The married couple no longer live together due to their care needs.

So we celebrated life and each other, we quietly and individually mourned what we’ve lost in health and missing people. We poignantly thought of the remaining parents. Yesterday, the kids planned and put things together. It was amazingly fun as many of us stayed only loosely connected over the years. So Hail, Hail the Gang’s not all here. Yet we each remembered the past in spirit and we toasted the future!live with even a portion of the frankly joyous abandon they shared with us is a Gift from the Gang.
