Shouldering Parental Responsibility

“I do everything for everyone, but I don’t do anything right” is a complaint I recently heard from a friend in the “Sandwich Generation”. Her college age kids are flexing their freedom, challenging decisions, complaining about mom’s interference in their lives and trusting she’ll continue to be sure tuition is paid on time. Not all together unexpected, but overwhelming when you add in that she has a parent with memory issues and another with health problems. My friends is challenged daily with the care system to keep her folks together despite their different health issues. Heck, she’s just plain challenged daily.

One piece of advice she gave to me, years ago as a new mom, was “as long as your trying, know that you’re doing something right”. I held on to that advice and re-read it more than once when it all seemed too much. It was only fair that I share that good advice back to her. I hope it helps her as much as it did me.
